Do you find yourself quickly forgetting or disregarding the goals you have set for yourself? Or do you find that your goals are constantly changing?
A lot of people have trouble setting and achieving goals because they are either too general, too vague, or they do not have a clear plan of action. And without a clear plan, it is easy to get sidetracked or discouraged.
A study conducted by the University of Scranton found that only 8% of people achieve their New Year's resolutions and less than half of Americans set any resolutions at all.
But it doesn't have to be this way!
Setting goals is an important part of any journey toward success, whether it is personal or professional because it gives you something to strive for and keeps you accountable.
It is, however, important to set the right kinds of goals and to follow a few simple steps to ensure that you are successful in achieving them.
And creating better goals does not have to be complicated either. Here are a few tips on how to set realistic, achievable goals that will help you reach your desired outcome:
1. Set specific goals
The first step to setting any goal is to be as specific as possible. This means, avoiding setting goals that are too general or vague such as "I want to lose weight" or "I want to save money."
Instead, specify exactly what you want to achieve and include a timeline if possible. For example, "I want to lose 10 pounds in 3 months" or "I want to save $500 in 6 months."
2. Set achievable goals
When setting your goals, it is important to make sure they are realistic and achievable. There is no point in setting a goal that is impossible to reach because you will only end up feeling disappointed and discouraged.
A good way to test the achievability of your goal is to ask yourself if it is something you can realistically accomplish given your current circumstances. For example, if you are currently employed full-time and have a family, setting a goal to start your own business from scratch in 6 months may not be realistic.
3. Set goals that are meaningful to you
It is also important to set goals that are meaningful to you and aligned with your values and interests. This will help ensure that you're more likely to stick with your goal and see it through to the end.
For example, if one of your values is health and wellness, setting a goal to lose weight or eat healthier would be more likely to resonate with you than if your goal was simply to make more money.
4. Set SMART goals
In addition to being specific, achievable, and meaningful, your goals should also be realistic and time-bound. This means they should be something you can accomplish within a specific timeframe.
The best way to set SMART goals is to use the acronym as a guide:
S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Achievable
R – Realistic
T – Time-bound
For example, a SMART goal might look like this: "I want to lose 10 pounds in 3 months" or "I want to save $500 in 6 months."
5. Create a plan of action
Once you have set your goals, it is important to create a plan of action that will help you reach them. This plan should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-bound just like your goals.
Your plan of action should also include a sequence of steps that you will take to reach your goal. For example, if your goal is to lose weight, your plan might look something like this:
I will exercise for 30 minutes 3 times per week.
I will eat a healthy breakfast every morning.
I will pack my lunch with healthy options 3 days per week.
I will eat out no more than 2 times per week.
I will drink 8 glasses of water per day.
6. Hold yourself accountable
Once you have set your goals and created a plan of action, it is important to hold yourself accountable throughout the process. This means tracking your progress, setting reminders, and finding someone who will support you.
There are several ways to hold yourself accountable, but one of the best is to use a goal-tracking app or online tool. This can help you stay on track and motivated as you work towards your goal. Also, using a goal-tracking tool can help you monitor your progress so you can adjust your plan of action if needed.
7. Celebrate your accomplishments
Finally, do not forget to celebrate your accomplishments along the way! This will help you stay motivated and focused on your goals. Whenever you reach a milestone, take a moment to reflect on how far you have come and pat yourself on the back. Then, keep moving forward until you reach your ultimate goal.
Creating better goals is an important step in achieving success, but it is just one piece of the puzzle.
Once you have set your goals, be sure to take action and stay accountable to reach them. With a little hard work and dedication, you can achieve anything you set your mind to! So get started today and start creating better goals for yourself!
And remember, always believe in yourself and never give up. No matter how hard it gets, keep pushing toward your goals and you will eventually get there!
