How To Form Habits To Routines

December 2, 2022

"The good news is that it is possible to develop habits that last if you are willing to put in the effort. By understanding how habits work and using some simple hacks, you can make developing good habits much simpler."

Do you find it hard to stick to good habits? Or maybe you have trouble following through on your goals?

If you answered yes to either of these questions, then you are not alone.

Most people find it difficult to form habits that stick because they do not have a clear plan or they are trying to change too many things at once. It is a process that requires some commitment and discipline, but it is doable.

And it is no wonder why forming habits can be so tough. According to Charles Duhigg, author of The Power of Habit, "Habits are the result of a neurological loop that starts with a cue and ends with a reward."

In other words, our brains are wired to seek out things that make us feel good at the moment, even if those things are not necessarily good for us in the long run. And that is why it is so important to have a plan for how you are going to form new habits that stick.

The good news is that it is possible to develop habits that last if you are willing to put in the effort. By understanding how habits work and using some simple hacks, you can make developing good habits much simpler.

Here are nine tips to help you get started and form habits that stick:

* Start with one habit at a time

Trying to change multiple habits at once is a recipe for failure. You are much more likely to stick to a new habit if you focus on one thing at a time and make it as easy as possible to succeed. It is better to have one really solid habit than several half-hearted ones and it will increase your sense of accomplishment too.

* Make it specific

Vague goals like "eat healthier" or "exercise more" are difficult to stick to because they are not specific enough. If you want to form a new habit, you need to be clear about what you want to do and when you are going to do it. And do not forget to measure your progress too.

* Make it easy

If you are trying to form a habit that is too difficult, you are setting yourself up for failure. Make it as easy as possible to stick to your new habit by starting small and gradually increasing the difficulty level over time.

* Set a reminder

A simple way to make sure you do not forget to do your new habit is to set a daily reminder. You can use a phone app, put a note in your planner, or set an alarm on your computer. This can help you stay on track when you are first starting and help you form a habit.

* Find a trigger

One of the best ways to make a new habit stick is to find a trigger that will remind you to do it. For example, if you want to start flossing your teeth every day, you could put your toothbrush and floss next to your bed so you see them when you wake up in the morning. This can help remind you to floss before you brush your teeth.

* Get an accountability partner

If you are struggling to stick to your new habit, enlist the help of a friend or family member. Having someone to hold you accountable can make all the difference and help you stay on track. Also, consider joining a support group or community dedicated to forming new habits because it can provide much-needed motivation and accountability.

* Reward yourself

A great way to motivate yourself to stick to a new habit is to give yourself a small reward each time you do it. This could be something as simple as taking a break to watch your favorite TV show or eating your favorite food. It can help reinforce the desired behavior and make it more likely that you will continue to do it in the future.

* Be patient

It takes at least 66 days for a new habit to become automatic, so do not expect to see results overnight. Habits take time to form, so be patient and focus on doing your best each day. With some effort and persistence, you can form habits that stick and help make your life better.

* Get help from a professional

If you are having trouble forming new habits on your own, consider seeking out the help of a professional. A therapist or coach can give you the tools you need to succeed and keep you accountable.

Forming new habits can be tough, but it is not impossible. By following these tips, you can make developing good habits much simpler and increase your chances of success.

With dedication and focus, you will be surprised at what you can accomplish. So start small today and keep going until you reach your goal. You got this!
