The Importance of Supporting Local Businesses

Why is it that people are so quick to purchase items from big box stores, but hesitate to buy from local businesses?

In today's day and age, it is more important than ever to support your local economy and buy locally whenever possible. And yet, people still flock to the big box stores for their purchases.

Part of the reason may be that they simply do not realize the importance of supporting local businesses or the many benefits that come along with it.

So, why is it important to support local businesses? Here are the reasons why:

* Local businesses make our communities more unique

It is the local businesses that make our communities special and unique. When you buy from a big box store, you are not supporting the local economy or contributing to the uniqueness of your community. And that's a shame!

So, do your part to make your community special by patronizing the local businesses that make it what it is.

* Local businesses create jobs

Big box stores may create some jobs in the community, but it is the local businesses that are responsible for job creation. In fact, according to the Small Business Administration, small businesses accounted for 63% of the net new jobs created in the U.S. between 1993 and 2011.

When you buy from a big box store, your money goes to corporate headquarters, which is likely located in another state or even another country. But when you buy from a local business, your money stays in the community, supporting other local businesses and families. 

So, if you want to keep your community strong, be sure to spend your money locally.

* Local businesses are more likely to give back to the community

Local businesses are usually owned by people who live in the community and have a vested interest in making it a better place. They are also more likely to donate their time, energy, and resources to local causes and charities.

So, when you support a local business, you're also supporting the community.

* Local businesses are more environmentally friendly

Because they rely on the local population for their business, local businesses don't have to transport their goods long distances. This cuts down on pollution and helps preserve our natural resources. And that's good for everyone!

* Local businesses provide better customer service

When you buy from a local business, you are not just a number or a faceless customer. You're a neighbor and a friend, and the business owner wants to keep it that way. That's why local businesses often provide better customer service than big box stores. They know that their reputation is on the line and that their customers are essential to their success.

* Local businesses promote competition and keep prices down

Big box stores may seem like they have all the power, but local businesses have a big impact on competition and pricing. When there's more competition in the market, businesses have to work harder to win customers, and that often means keeping prices down.

So, even if you do not shop at a local business, the fact that they are there can help keep prices low at the big box store.

* Local businesses are the heart and soul of our communities

Local businesses are what make our communities special. They give us a sense of place and belonging. They are the places where we gather to socialize and connect with our neighbors. We need local businesses to create thriving, vibrant communities.

* When local businesses thrive, we all benefit

When local businesses do well, everyone in the community benefits. The economy gets a boost, and jobs are created. We have more tax revenue to support our schools and other vital services. Our quality of life improves, and our community becomes a better place to live.

So, the next time you are considering where to do your shopping, remember the importance of supporting local businesses. You will be doing yourself, your community, and the world a favor!
