How To Finally Stop Procrastinating And Get Stuff Done

Drewbie Wilson • March 31, 2023

"Conquering procrastination requires time, effort, and perseverance. But if you are willing to put in the work, you can overcome it and start getting things done."

Have you ever felt the urge to procrastinate? Or you may have been sitting at your desk for hours, wondering why you cannot get started on that project.

Of course, you have - we all do! It is a natural human tendency to put off doing things we find difficult or unenjoyable.

But what if there was a way to stop procrastinating and get stuff done?

It turns out there is!

So, what are you waiting for? Let's get started!

1. Make a plan

The first step to conquering procrastination is to make a plan. It is much easier to get started when you know what you need to do and how you will do it.

Start by breaking the task down into smaller, more manageable steps. Then, create a timeline for each step and schedule some buffer time if you run into any delays. And finally, remember to include a deadline for yourself.

2. Get rid of distractions

One of the biggest reasons why we procrastinate is because we allow ourselves to get distracted. Whether checking your email, browsing social media, or watching TV, these activities can quickly save your time and prevent you from getting started on your task.

To avoid getting distracted, try to create a distraction-free environment for yourself. Turn off your phone, close all tabs on your computer except the one you are working on, and remove any other potential distractions. And if you need to, set a timer for yourself so you can focus for a specific period without getting sidetracked.

3. Take a break

Contrary to popular belief, taking breaks can help you be more productive. When you're feeling overwhelmed or frustrated, stepping away from your work for a few minutes can help you clear your head and return refreshed.

Just make sure to avoid falling into the trap of taking too many breaks or making them too long. If you frequently take hour-long breaks, it is time to reevaluate your work habits.

4. Reward yourself

One of the best motivators is knowing that there is a reward at the end. So, when you complete a task or reach a milestone, pat yourself on the back - literally! Studies have shown that physical rewards can help increase your motivation and drive.

And it does not have to be anything big or expensive. Something as simple as taking a few minutes to relax or indulging in your favorite snack can be enough to give you the boost you need to keep going.

5. Just get started

One of the hardest things about conquering procrastination is getting started. But the rest will be much easier once you take that first step. So, if you find yourself stuck, take a deep breath and jump in. Once you start, you will be surprised at how quickly you can get things done.

6. Be patient with yourself

Conquering procrastination is a process, and it will not happen overnight. So, be patient with yourself, and do not get discouraged if you have setbacks because everyone does.

Remember that you are progressing; each day is a new opportunity to get things done. Also, try to find someone who can hold you accountable and support you when needed.

7. Seek professional help

If you have been struggling to overcome procrastination alone, it might be time to seek professional help. There's no shame in admitting that you need assistance, and a therapist can help you identify the root cause of your problem and develop a plan to overcome it.

So, if you feel stuck, feel free to ask for help. It could be the key to finally conquering procrastination once and for all.

Conquering procrastination requires time, effort, and perseverance. But if you are willing to put in the work, you can overcome it and start getting things done.

Remember to be patient with yourself; breaking old habits takes time.
