Have you ever felt like you are not performing as well as you could be at work?
If so, you are not alone. We all have off days (or even off weeks) where we just do not seem to be firing on all cylinders. And while there may be some external factors beyond our control that contribute to this (a challenging project, a looming deadline, etc.), more often than not, the root cause of our underperformance is internal. We are simply not bringing our A-game to work.
But whatever the reason, if you are not performing at your best, it can be frustrating – for you and your teammates. And it can hurt your career.
So, what can you do to get back on track and start performing at your peak? Here are nine tips to help you boost your performance at work:
1. Get organized
If you are feeling overwhelmed by your workload, take a few minutes to get organized. Make a to-do list for the day, week, or month ahead, and break down each task into small, manageable steps. This will help you to focus on what needs to be done and feel more in control of your work.
2. Take regular breaks
When you are feeling frazzled, it can be tempting to just keep working – but this is actually counter-productive. Working for long periods without a break can lead to burnout, so make sure to take regular time out to rest and recharge. Even taking 5 minutes every hour or so to stretch your legs or grab a cup of coffee can make a big difference to your energy levels and focus.
3. Get enough sleep
This one might seem obvious, but it is worth repeating: getting enough sleep is essential for peak performance. Most people need around 7-8 hours of sleep a night, so make sure you are getting enough shut-eye. This will help you to feel more alert and able to concentrate during the day.
4. Eat healthy meals
What we eat also has a big impact on our energy levels and performance at work. If you are snacking on junk food or skipping meals altogether, you are likely to feel tired and sluggish. So make sure to eat regular, healthy meals throughout the day. And if you need a little pick-me-up in the afternoon, reach for some fruit or nuts instead of sugary snacks.
5. Exercise
It might seem counter-intuitive, but exercise can actually help to improve your performance at work. Even just a short burst of activity can increase your energy levels and help you to focus better. So if you are struggling to get going in the morning, go for a quick run or do some stretches before starting your day. And if you find yourself losing focus in the afternoon, take a walk around the block or do some desk exercises.
6. Take time for yourself
When we are feeling stressed, it can be tempting to just work, work, work. But this is not sustainable in the long-term. If you want to perform at your best, you need to make time for yourself outside of work. This could involve hobbies, spending time with friends and family, or just taking some time out to relax. When you feel happier and more balanced, it will show in your work.
7. Set realistic goals
If you are constantly setting yourself unrealistic goals, it is no wonder you are struggling to perform at your best. So instead of aiming for perfection, focus on setting achievable goals that you can meet. This will help you to feel more motivated, and less overwhelmed by your work.
8. Delegate tasks
If you are trying to do everything yourself, it is no wonder you're struggling to keep up. So learn to delegate tasks, and trust your teammates to get the job done. This will lighten your workload, and free up your time to focus on more important tasks.
9. Talk to your boss
If you are struggling to cope with your workload, talk to your boss. They may be able to give you some advice on how to better manage your time or delegate tasks to other team members. And if you are still struggling, they may be able to offer some additional support. So, do not be afraid to speak up – your boss wants you to succeed, so they will be more than happy to help.
By following these tips, you can start to boost your performance at work and feel more in control of your career.
Just remember to take things one step at a time, and be patient with yourself – you will soon be back to your usual high standards.
