Have you ever felt not good enough? Do you find yourself constantly comparing your achievements to others and falling short?
If you answered yes to either of these questions, then it is likely that you have low self-esteem because you don’t value and respect yourself as much as you should.
Self-esteem is our overall opinion of ourselves. It includes the beliefs we have about ourselves and how competent, valuable, and worthy we feel.
People with healthy self-esteem feel confident and good about themselves most of the time. They do not compare themselves to others and they do not base their worth on what others think of them.
And as a result, they are usually more successful in life.
If you have low self-esteem, do not worry, you are not alone. Research shows that as many as 60% of people suffer from low self-esteem at some point in their lives. If you have low self-esteem, it can impact every area of your life including your relationships, your career, and your health.
Luckily, there are many things you can do to boost your self-esteem and start feeling good about yourself again.
1. Get rid of any negative self-talk
The first step to boosting your self-esteem is to get rid of any negative self-talk. This is the little voice in your head that tells you that you’re not good enough or that you cannot do something. For example, if you are thinking about going for a promotion at work but your negative self-talk tells you that you are not qualified or that someone else is better suited for the job, then that is going to impact your self-esteem.
Start paying attention to the thoughts that run through your head daily and see if you can identify any negative self-talk. Once you are aware of it, you can start working on replacing those negative thoughts with more positive and realistic ones.
2. Set realistic goals
One of the reasons why people have low self-esteem is that they set unrealistic goals for themselves and then beat themselves up when they do not achieve them. For example, if your goal is to lose ten pounds in one week, then that is probably not going to happen and you are going to end up feeling disappointed and stressed.
Instead, focus on setting realistic goals that you know you can achieve. When you accomplish your goals, no matter how small they may be, it will boost your self-esteem because you will feel competent.
3. Do something outside your comfort zone
Another way to boost your self-esteem is to do something outside your comfort zone. This can be anything from taking a dance class to public speaking.
Doing things that make you feel a little bit uncomfortable at first will help you to realize that you are capable of more than you think. It will also help you to build your confidence because you will know that you can handle anything that comes your way.
4. Surround yourself with positive people
The people you surround yourself with can have a big impact on your self-esteem. If you are constantly around people who are negative and who put you down, then that is going to make you feel bad about yourself. On the other hand, if you surround yourself with positive people who support and encourage you, then that is going to boost your self-esteem.
Make an effort to spend more time with the people in your life who make you feel good about yourself and try to distance yourself from the people who bring you down.
5. Volunteer
Helping others is a great way to boost your self-esteem. When you volunteer, you will feel good about yourself because you know that you are making a difference in someone else’s life. It can also help you to feel more connected to your community and the people around you.
There are many different ways you can volunteer, so find something that interests you. You can volunteer at a local soup kitchen, help out at an animal shelter, or tutor children after school.
6. Accept compliments
When someone pays you a compliment, do you believe them or do you brush it off? If you are the latter, then that is something you need to work on. When someone pays you a compliment, it is because they genuinely see something good in you. But if you do not accept the compliment, then you are essentially telling yourself that you do not deserve it. Next time someone pays you a compliment, say “thank you” and believe that they are telling the truth.
7. Learn to forgive yourself
If you make a mistake or do something you are not proud of, it is important to learn to forgive yourself. Otherwise, you are going to end up dwelling on it and beating yourself up. Nobody is perfect and everyone makes mistakes. What counts is how you learn from your mistakes and move on. So the next time you make a mistake, cut yourself some slack and try to learn from it instead of dwelling on it.
8. Do not compare yourself to others
One of the quickest ways to feel bad about yourself is to compare yourself to others. When you do this, you are usually only focusing on the things that you do not have or that you wish you could change. For example, you might see someone thinner than you and wish that you were like that. Or you might see someone more successful than you and feel inferior.
Instead of comparing yourself to others, focus on your unique qualities and what makes you special. And remind yourself that everyone has their struggles and insecurities, even the people who seem to have it all together.
9. Practice self-care
Last but not least, practicing self-care is crucial if you want to boost your self-esteem. When you take care of yourself, it sends the message that you are worth taking care of.
Self-care can be anything from getting regular exercise to taking some time for yourself each day to do something that you enjoy. Do whatever makes you feel good and try to make self-care a priority in your life.
These are just a few simple tips that you can use to boost your self-esteem.
Just remember that it takes time and effort to change the way you feel about yourself. But if you are patient and you keep at it, you will eventually start to see a difference.
And remember, no matter what, you are worth it!
