5 Do's And Don't Of Naming A Small Business

Drewbie Wilson • September 9, 2022

"Your business name is one of the first things potential customers will see and it can be a make or break factor in whether or not they choose to do business with you."

Are you thinking about naming your small business, but not sure where to start? Or maybe you already got a name picked out but you are not sure if it is the right one.

Naming a business can be very tricky- you want something catchy and memorable, but also reflects the products or services that you offer. And with so many businesses out there, it can be difficult to stand out from the crowd. It can be a daunting task, but do not worry- I am here to help!

Your business name is one of the first things potential customers will see and it can be a make or break factor in whether or not they choose to do business with you.

It is important to put some thought into it and make sure you are making the best choice for your business. So it is important to get it right!

And there are a lot of things to consider when naming a small business and if you are having trouble coming up with the perfect name for your business, here are five of the most important do's and don'ts to help you out:

Do's

1. Keep it simple

The best names are usually short, sweet, and to the point. Do not try to be too clever or cutesy - it will just make your name harder to remember and pronounce. It is important that your name is easy to say and spell so potential customers will not have any trouble finding you.

2. Make it meaningful

Your business name should reflect what your business does or what it stands for. This will help customers connect with your brand and remember it more easily. It can be helpful to include keywords in your business name that describe what you do.

3. Be unique

With so many businesses out there, it is important to make sure your business name stands out from the rest. Avoid names that are too similar to other businesses or that are generic and unmemorable. The best names are those that are unique and will make people take notice.

4. Do your research

Before settling on a name, make sure you check to see if it is already being used by another company. You do not want to accidentally choose a name that is so similar to someone else's and risk getting sued for trademark infringement. It may also be helpful to search social media to see if there are any negative associations with the name you are considering.

5. Test it out

Once you have narrowed down your choices, it can be helpful to test out the names with potential customers or target markets. See if they can pronounce and remember the name easily. Ask them what they think the name says about your business. This can give you valuable feedback to help you make your final decision.

Don'ts

1. Don't be too generic

Your name should be specific enough to give customers an idea of what your business does, but not so specific that it limits your growth potential. For example, a company that sells car parts would want to avoid a name like "Joe's Car Parts" in case it decided to branch out into selling other automotive products in the future.

2. Avoid trendy names

It is tempting to want to choose a name that is hip and current but resist the urge. Trendy names can make your business seem dated quickly, so it is better to go with something timeless instead and avoid having to rebrand down the road.

3. Steer clear of difficult-to-spell or pronounce names

Remember, you want your name to be easy for potential customers to remember and identify. If it is too complicated, they are likely to just move on to a different business and you will lose out on their business.

4. Don't get too attached to your first choice

Be prepared to let go of your first choice if it does not meet all of the criteria on this list. It is better to have a great name that works for your business than to be stuck with a name you are not happy with because you were too attached to it.

5. Don't rush the process

Give yourself time to brainstorm and consider all of your options. It is important to take the time to get it right rather than rushing into a decision you may later regret. And if you are still stuck, there is no shame in seeking out professional help to come up with the perfect name for your business.

With these do's and don'ts in mind, you should be well on your way to choosing a great name for your small business.

Just remember to keep it simple, make it meaningful, be unique, and do your research to ensure you are making the best decision for your business.
