10 Time Wasters That You Should Avoid

December 16, 2022

"If you can learn to identify and avoid these time wasters, you will be well on your way to becoming more productive. And who knows, you might even find that you have some extra time on your hands!"

Are you productive? Do you get things done? If not, then you may be wasting time without even realizing it.

Wasting time can lead to missed deadlines, poor work quality, and low productivity. It can also lead to stress and frustration.

There are many different ways to waste time. Some are obvious, while others are more subtle. And, unfortunately, many of us are guilty of wasting time without even realizing it.

So what are some of the biggest time wasters? Here are 10 of the most common:

1. Social Media

We all know how easy it is to get lost in social media. Whether you’re scrolling through Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, it’s easy to waste hours on end without even realizing it. If you find yourself getting sucked into social media, try setting a timer for yourself. Give yourself 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or even an hour to scroll through your feed. Once the timer goes off, log off and get back to work.

2. Checking Email Constantly

For many of us, checking email is a reflex. Whenever we hear that little “ding” notification, we can’t help but stop what we’re doing to see what new message has come in. But checking email constantly can be a huge time waster. If you find yourself checking your inbox every few minutes, try setting specific times to check your email instead. Once or twice an hour should be plenty.

3. Putting Off Tasks

We’ve all been there – we have a task that we don’t want to do, so we keep putting it off. Maybe it’s a project at work, or maybe it’s something around the house. Whatever it is, procrastinating is a surefire way to waste time. If you have a task that you’re dreading, try to get it out of the way as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more time you’ll waste.

4. Not Prioritizing

If you don’t prioritize your tasks, you’ll likely find yourself wasting a lot of time. It’s important to figure out what tasks are the most important and need to be done first. Otherwise, you may find yourself working on something that isn’t a priority, while more important tasks go by the wayside.

5. Multitasking

You may think that multitasking is a good way to be productive, but in reality, it’s often a huge time waster. When you try to do too many things at once, you’re likely to make mistakes and take longer than if you had just focused on one thing at a time. So next time you’re tempted to multitask, resist the urge and focus on one thing at a time instead.

6. Not Taking Breaks

You may think that the best way to be productive is to just power through your work without taking any breaks. But this can lead to burnout and decrease your productivity in the long run. It’s important to take breaks throughout the day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Step away from your desk, get up and move around, and clear your head. You’ll be surprised at how refreshed you feel when you come back to work.

7. Not Planning Ahead

If you don’t take the time to plan ahead, you’re likely to waste a lot of time. For example, if you’re working on a project, it’s important to map out what needs to be done and in what order. Otherwise, you may find yourself going back and forth and making changes that could have been avoided.

8. Get Distracted Easily

It’s easy to get distracted when you’re trying to focus on a task. Maybe you start daydreaming, or maybe you get pulled into a conversation with a colleague. Whatever the case may be, getting distracted can lead to wasted time. If you find yourself getting easily distracted, try to find a place to work where it’s quiet and there are fewer distractions.

9. Perfectionism

Many of us are guilty of being perfectionists. We want everything to be just right, so we spend extra time making sure that it is. But this can often lead to wasted time. It’s important to learn to let go and accept that things may not be perfect. Otherwise, you may find yourself spending way too much time on something that doesn’t even need to be perfect.

10. Not Saying “No”

If you have a hard time saying “no,” you may find yourself taking on more than you can handle. This can lead to a lot of wasted time, as you try to juggle everything that you’ve taken on. It’s important to learn to say “no” when you need to. Otherwise, you may end up spreading yourself too thin and not being able to focus on what’s important.

These are just a few of the many time wasters that you should avoid.
