10 Simple Ways To Beat Burnout

December 22, 2022

"Burnout is a serious issue, but it does not have to be a permanent part of your life. By taking steps to prevent burnout and getting help when you need it, you can overcome this difficult time and get back to enjoying your life."

Are you struggling with burnout? Or, are you trying to avoid it?

Feeling burnt out at work is incredibly common. A study by Gallup found that 23% of employees feel burnt out very often or always, while an additional 44% feel burnt out sometimes. And it is not just affecting our work lives – burnout is also taking a toll on our personal lives and relationships.

Burnout is a complex issue, but it can be managed. If you are struggling with burnout, know that you are not alone. And there are things you can do to combat it.

So what can you do to beat burnout? Here are ten simple (but effective) ways:

1. Get enough sleep

This one seems pretty obvious, but it is worth repeating: make sure you are getting enough sleep. Most adults need 7-8 hours of sleep per night, so try to stick to that as much as possible. If you have trouble sleeping, there are a few things you can do to help:

- Establish a bedtime routine and stick to it as much as possible

- Avoid caffeine and alcohol before bed

- Create a calm and comfortable environment in your bedroom

- Avoid screens (including your phone) for at least 30 minutes before bedtime

- Practice some relaxation techniques before bed

2. Eat healthily and exercise

When you are feeling burnt out, it can be tempting to reach for unhealthy comfort foods or to skip workouts. But resist the temptation! Eating junk food and being sedentary will only make you feel worse in the long run.

3. Take breaks during the day

When you’re feeling overwhelmed, it can be tempting to just power through and work straight through the day. But this is a recipe for burnout. Make sure you are taking breaks – even if it is just a few minutes here and there. Get up and walk around, or step outside for some fresh air. And if you can, take a real break – go for a walk, grab a coffee, or chat with a friend.

4. Set limits on work

One of the best things you can do to avoid burnout is to set boundaries with work. If you can, don’t bring work home with you. And when you are at work, try to set aside some time each day when you are not working (even if it is just 30 minutes). This will help you avoid feeling like you are always “on" and will help keep you from getting overwhelmed.

5. Find a hobby outside of work

It is important to have something in your life that is not work-related. When you have a hobby that you are passionate about, it can give you something to look forward to outside of work. And it can help you feel more balanced and less stressed.

6. Simplify your life

If you are feeling overwhelmed, it might be because your life is too complicated. Take a look at your schedule and see if there is anything you can cut out. Do you need to be doing all the things you’re doing? If not, simplify your life and cut out some of the extra commitments because they are likely just adding to your stress.

7. Delegate and ask for help

If you are trying to do everything yourself, you’re setting yourself up for burnout. Learn to delegate and ask for help when you need it. This can be tough for some people, but it is important to remember that you cannot (and should not) do everything yourself.

8. Say “no”

Related to the point above, one of the best things you can do to avoid burnout is to learn to say “no.” If you’re constantly saying “yes” to things, you are likely taking on more than you can handle. So next time someone asks you to do something, think about whether or not you have the time and energy for it. If not, do not be afraid to say “no.”

9. Find a support system

Having a supportive network of family and friends is important for avoiding burnout. These people can provide a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, or simply a break from the everyday grind. If you don’t have a strong support system, there are other places you can turn, such as support groups or therapy.

10. Seek professional help

If you are struggling with burnout, do not be afraid to seek professional help. A therapist can help you identify the source of your stress and find healthy ways to deal with it. It may also be helpful to talk to your doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions.

Burnout is a serious issue, but it does not have to be a permanent part of your life. By taking steps to prevent burnout and getting help when you need it, you can overcome this difficult time and get back to enjoying your life.

And remember, you do not have to go through this alone – seek out support from family and friends, or a professional if needed.

With the right help, you can overcome burnout and get back to living a happy, healthy life!
